IEBC gazettes names of independent candidates and their symbols

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has gazetted names and symbols of aspirants eyeing elective seats as independent candidates.

This is after the candidates submitted their symbols and expressed intention to contest as independent candidates for the General Election to be held on 9th August, 2022.

The candidates are required to present themselves to the respective Returning Officer on the appointed dates for Commission nominations.

The Commission’s Returning Officers are expected to start registering candidates to contest for various elective seats from the 29th of May to 7th June 2022.

The electoral agency will also hold a pre-nomination meeting with all the Presidential Aspirants (or their authorized representatives) on the 23rd of May 2022 at the Bomas of Kenya from 8:00 am.

“Aspirants for the other elective positions will be informed of dates for pre-nomination meetings by their respective Returning Officers,” said IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

Chebukati called on aspirants to familiarize themselves with the requirements for registration as candidates by making inquiries at the Commission’s County and Constituency offices.

In the list, a total of 38 individuals have expressed interest to vie for the presidential seat.

Among the notable aspirants in IEBC’s list include; legendary musician Reuben Kigame, Nazlin Omar and Jeremiah Nyagah.

The presidential race has attracted a total of 55 aspirants with 14 from political parties.

In the 47 gubernatorial seats up for grabs in the August polls, a total of 244 gubernatorial aspirants, out of which 167 are political party aspirants and 77 independent candidate Aspirants.

IEBC said that the gubernatorial aspirants will be cleared as candidates by the County Returning Officers during the registration period, once their qualification to contest in the respective elective positions are ascertained.

The National Assembly race has attracted 748 independent candidates for the 290 elective seats with 95 female independent candidates for Women Representative positive.
