Deputy President William Ruto has urged Kenyans to remain committed to pushing for the prosperity and unity of the nation as the country marked the 59th Madaraka Day celebrations.
In his twitter account shortly after the Madaraka Day fete at Uhuru Gardens Wednesday, the deputy president asked Kenyans not forget that they are responsible for the next years ahead, reminding them that they are the makers of this nation.
“Today we celebrate 59 years of Madaraka but we must not forget that we are responsible for the next years ahead, we are the makers of this nation, let us choose a path of progress, unity and prosperity,” he said.
Ruto said Madaraka Day is a reminder that the people are the sole authors of the Kenyan story, calling on them to write new chapters of prosperity and abundance for all; especially ordinary people.
The DP was snubbed during the celebrations missing a chance to address guests in a national event for the first time.
Only President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Sierra Leone counterpart, Julius Maada Bio addressed the function.
Earlier President Uhuru had hosted the Cabinet for a brief meeting at State House where he thanked them for their support during his tenure.
The Cabinet Secretaries on their part thanked the President for believing and trusting in them to deliver his big four agenda and wished him well as his term in the office comes to end.
While the meeting was ongoing, the Deputy President was at Uhuru Gardens receiving guests, with sources indicating that he had not been invited.
Later, the DP attended the Hustlers Cup finals at Thirime Primary School Grounds, Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County.
Speaking after the tournament, the DP said the August 9 General Election is about the economy and how to fix it.
The Deputy President who is also the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential flag bearer was accompanied by allies Musalia Mudavadi of Amani National Congress and Moses Wetang’ula of Ford Kenya who pledged to regulate taxes on sports equipment if UDA forms the next government.
