A Letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta: Lower Food Prices, Eating Is Becoming a Luxury

Living in Kenya is tough, a thought to look for greener pastures abroad surfaces, but when I think of Kenyans working in other countries, especially in the Middle East, arriving in caskets, I fear for my life and just opt to persevere and grind. The country has failed to protect its citizens abroad.

This is an emotional message to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his ‘ghost’ Deputy President William Ruto. Come together and work towards reducing the cost of living of your people.

The DP is fighting the government across an imaginary fence, and on the other hand, the President is concentrating on 2022 politics and pushing succession politics in rare political showdowns that the Head of State should never engage when he is still active in the office. Or your terms have ended? Do we take to the ballot next month? It is impossible.

Kenyans are crying, both industrialists and consumers. The cost of production is high, which leads to a subsequent rise in living costs. For instance, a kilogram of sugar retails at Ksh140, which is almost a double rise from the previous Ksh85 or Ksh90. Sugar could shoot up to Ksh100, and we could complain a lot. Now you can envision what Kenyans are going through when it has risen by Ksh50, this is a stab in the belly.

An average Kenyan earns hardly Ksh200 a day, elucidating that taking three meals a day is just but a dream that will never come true, how painful. It is the same Kenyan that woke up early in 2013 and 2017 to vote for you, yet you cannot think about their lives, but of campaigns as if when all is well with you, it is also well with us.

The food prices are at their highest in the post-handshake era, and this is squeezing out our lungs. With no employment, Kenyans pray to manage a day when political bigwigs are taking to Dubai for refreshment after ‘long working months’ doing nothing to benefit the electors.

With 2022 General Elections drawing closer, this is the time for Kenyans to speak. It is your vote that will change the destiny of this country. Your single vote will determine the price reduction of petroleum products, cost of electricity, and general basic needs. Vote wisely. It is not obvious that the DP must succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta because of their initial political covenant. Also, it is not apparent that Raila Odinga must be the fifth President because he has been endorsed by the President.

Shape your outlook and make a proper judgment with all your sufferings and aspirations in mind. It is high time we change Kenya. Together we can do it.
