Foreign Affairs Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Ababu Namwamba has joined Deputy President William Ruto’s office under the second in command’s presidential campaign secretariat.
In a statement, Ruto’s presidential campaign director of communication, Hussein Mohammed said Namwamba is the head of international relations in the secretariat.
Hussein said the former Budalangi MP’s wealth of expertise and broad experience as a leader, lawyer, politician, and diplomat will inject freshness into the team.
Dr. Ruto said: “We have closely with Ababu over the past ten years on many fronts and I have come to value his leadership, experience, focus, and empathy. It is because of those qualities I could not be more grateful to have him on our campaign team. With his considerable diplomatic talents, deep knowledge of the continent, strong network in the global stage, and unwavering determination, I am confident in his role, leading international relations within my presidential campaign.”
However, Namwamba is yet to resign from his government job. All civil servants intending to join politics have until today to quit.
The former lawmaker was one of the most loyal foot soldiers of ODM leader Raila Odinga until July 2016 when he resigned as ODM Secretary-General.
He accused the former Prime Minister of betraying him.
The CAS unsuccessfully contested for the third term in 2017 and lost to Raphael Wanjala of ODM. He was supporting the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ruto.
However, ODM insiders recently revealed that Raila’s beef with Namwamba started in 2014 during the chaotic party election at Kasarani Stadium.
Namwamba had reportedly been paid by the DP to take over the party from Raila.
Together with then ODM Executive Director Magerer Langat, the duo manipulated the party’s delegates’ list to favour the officials Ruto wanted to take charge. Magerer had earlier told a rally in Nakuru that Raila was too old to lead the party.
It took the intervention of George Aladwa, Elizabeth Ongoro, and Reuben Ndolo to prevent the coup.
They quickly hired goons and sneaked them into the venue. The “men in black” disrupted the election.
