Several Kenyan celebrities have revealed they have been harshly judged for one reason or another. The most pressure comes from people expecting them to be ‘rich’ or ‘act rich’, simply because of their social status. Well, it hasn’t been any different for Erastus Otieno, who is better known for his name Flaqo and the famous Mama Otis character.
The multitalented thespian was on the Loop show hosted by Mike Wachira on K24 and spoke about hard times when his name was big on the airwaves but his pay was equal to nothing. He said that at times, he would eat in a kibanda (eatery) he would spot someone trying to film him to expose his financial predicament.
“The point is you can be super famous and super broke. People expect so much. I was really heartbroken my numbers were really high sometimes higher than those (influencers) that were getting endorsements, but I wasn’t getting anything,” he recalled.
Flaqo revealed that those were some of his lowest moments and that he almost gave up his comic career. When the name ‘Mama Otis’ is mentioned, a majority of Kenyans know they are in for a good laugh.
Flaqo as Mama Otis
Flaqo has flourished on making funny clips on the way parents treat their children. The public health’s graduate’s biggest online platform is his YouTube channel, which has 395,000 subscribers with his Mother’s Day video having garnered over 1.3 million views in just two months.
The rib-tickling man has managed to play three different characters — Mama Otis, Baba Otis, and Otis’ Sister.
