One of the biggest events back when things were exciting was the unveiling of the new version of Android. There used to be rumours, and suggestions, and then the official name would drop. I remember being excited for Android Ice Cream Sandwich through to Android Pie.

This was back when new versions of Android would be named after a dessert in an alphabetical order.

With Android 10 in 2019, Google decided to kill off the tradition – for whichever flimsy reason they gave. And so we’ve gone through Android 10, and Android 11 without dessert name unveilings.

It seems that’s changing. Google’s Vice President of Engineering for Android, confirmed on Monday the official dessert name for the latest version of the OS will be Snow Cone.

Whether this will be the name the company refers to Android 12 as – like in the past – or just a fun little tweet, we cannot say. However, it feels exciting to have dessert names. And Android Snow Cone sounds quite apt.

Even though we’ve not had Dessert Names since 2019, internally, the company still referred to new versions of Android with code names that followed the original alphabetical naming scheme.

So Android 10 was known as Quince Tart (makes sense why they didn’t call it so publicly – I had to google what quince tart is). Android 11 was known as Red Velvet Cake – sweet!

The return of this naming tradition though quite good, also shows how the company has changed. For example, we already know that Android 13 will be called Tiramisu thanks to a reveal in a public AOSP code change. So it seems the company won’t be keeping the tradition of huge reveals inasmuch as the dessert names will stay.
