Traders of Gikomba have complained of multiple permits required by the county government in order to operate their business.
The traders said despite the hardships occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, they have to pay exorbitant fees to the county government.
“As small traders, we want the many licenses and fees we pay to the county government converted into a one-off fee,” said Jane Njeri, a trader.
The traders spoke when Nairobi governor aspirant Richard Ngatia toured the Gikomba market on Thursday.
Mr Ngatia who is vying under the Azimio la Umoja coalition led by Raila Odinga promised to work with the traders if he is elected governor in the August elections.
The traders also complained of lack of clean water, insecurity and dilapidated roads which they said drive away customers.
Ngatia who also made stopovers in Kibra, Ruaraka and Mathare said every city dweller respective of where they reside must get quality services from the county government.
”We will ensure there is lighting, social amenities and that all hospitals are supplied with drugs,” said the aspirant who is also the president of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI).
He said the chamber had started plans to uplift small and medium enterprises through a Sh600 courtesy of Mastercard Foundation.
Ngatia also told the traders to vote Azimio’s Raila as the next president so that he can work with him to uplift the living standards of city dwellers.
He was accompanied by former Kasarani MP Elizabeth Ongoro and a host of city MCAs.
Ngatia will be facing other aspirants such as Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, United Democratic Alliance’s Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, Senator Johnson Sakaja, former Dagoretti MP Dennis Waweru and Governor Anne Kananu.
