English Premier League side Aston Villa on Thursday, 11th November confirmed the appointment of Steven Gerrard as their new manager.
The former Liverpool captain who joins Villa from the Scottish side Glasgow Rangers has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at Villa Park.
He replaces Dean Smith, who was dismissed on Sunday after a fifth straight league defeat left Villa 16th in the standings with 10 points just two points above the relegation zone after 11 matches.
“Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new Head Coach. In my conversations with Nassef, Wes and the rest of the Board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims,” Gerrard said in a statement.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everybody associated with Glasgow Rangers for giving me the opportunity to manage such an iconic football club. Helping them secure a record-breaking 55th league title will always hold a special place in my heart. I would like to wish the players, staff and supporters the very best for the future.”
Gerrard, 41, has been in charge of Rangers since June 2018 and last season he guided the club to their first league title since 2011 with the side going unbeaten.
His first match in charge as new Villa boss is a Premier League encounter against Brighton on 20th November.
Meanwhile, Liverpool and Villa will meet at Anfield in the Premier League clash on 11th December.
