The national women’s hockey team head coach Meshack Senge says for the team to do better at the forthcoming Commonwealth games the coaching unit will have to restructure its system of play ahead of the games slated for 28th July-8th August 2022 in Birmingham, UK.

‘’Where we are right now in terms of training we are readjusting into systems that will be able to help us get results in the games that we will play. You realise that the kind of opposition we are going to face is not the opposition we are used to here in Africa. So we have had to rethink our system of play, and right now we are inculcating the defensive system into the players’’, remarked Meshack.

The national women’s hockey team began preparations for the Commonwealth Games at City Park Stadium.

Kenya is pooled in group B alongside defending champions New Zealand, and 2014 winners Australia, Scotland and South Africa.

A desirable result against their opponents at the games according to Senge will come if Kenya gets enough preparations including playing friendly matches to gauge their readiness.

‘’Shortly we will want to test what we have done in training against a local opposition and later a foreign opposition before the games’’,Senge added.

A squad of 30 players is currently in camp for seven weeks and will be whittled further to 18 who will head to the games.

‘’The camp has really helped us gel and bond apart from being crucial to our preparations, we are ready for the games’’, said Blades player Maroline Wabomba sentiments echoed by her teammate Chebet Namre Elena ‘’ The camp is essential in that it makes us gel faster and train together which will increase our understanding on the pitch’’, she said.

National Olympic Committee of Kenya, NOC-K, announced this week that Kenya is expected to send a contingent of 123 athletes across 20 sporting disciplines. Athletics will take the lion’s share of the allocation with 45 athletes.
