Boniface Mwangi’s Wife Njeri Sexually Assaulted by Matatu Touts (Video)

Social-political activist and photojournalist, Boniface Mwangi has disclosed that today, his wife Njeri was hounded by matatu touts.

He narrates that the touts harassed and touched his wife inappropriately and went on to defame them when the couple tried to reprove them.

Taking to Instagram, Boniface shared a video of a tout who dared them to take his pictures and even posed to allow time for the activist to take perfect pictures. The tout also plucked up the courage to tell Boniface to capture the number plate of the matatu is heard in the video saying, “nataka kuonekana kwa media”.

“This country went to the dogs. I was walking down Kangundo Road with my wife a few minutes ago, the bottom feeder in a striped T-shirt touched her when she asked why, they started throwing insults and grabbing their private parts. Impunity is so deep that they feel untouchable! How does this happen to women? Has it ever happened to you, and what can we do about it?” Boniface posed.

Further, Boniface pointed fingers at the Authorities, saying that they were to blame since the system is marred with corruption and none can be held accountable due to bribes they offer.

“Women are saying they experience non-consensual touch every day in the hands of strangers especially Public Service Vehicles conductors. The touts know every cop has a price. The bribe is more powerful than justice. Police corruption is the biggest reason why it happens,” Bonnie shared.

The post was accompanied by comments by women who had experienced the same, saying that they feel disregarded and their dignity overlooked by matatu touts.

Aura_Lisimba: “And yes, it has happened to me in town years back I was crossing the road to go to Afya center to take a mat, and a dude literally put his hand on my privates and then walked past licking his lips. Some men, and women, laughed at me. I was in shock. I cried all the way home. And NO, I wasn’t indecently dressed, as a matter of fact, I was in a tracksuit from training. CBD gives me so much anxiety. I’m grateful I don’t have to go there anymore.”

Lizmuthoninyaga: “Yesterday it happened to me hapa Roysambu-footbridge on Thika rd. A man tried touching me on my lower body privates parts but since nimezoea such experiences. I quickly removed his hand. So I questioned him, as to why he would do such a foul thing in broad daylight. He started hurling insults at me till some other guy came hapo. Na coz again, nimezoea, I couldn’t shy off from giving him a piece of my mind. I WAS INSULTED, SEXUALLY HARASSED, but u know what is more surprising is that the men who cane when they heard the noise were like it’s not a big deal. I wish I had something to defend myself. Impunity left, right, and center. Even those who witnessed were just calmly sitting by as that guy hurled insults at me. It hurt me deeply. That was around 3 pm when I got to the house after the event. I tried going to buy dinner as per my usual time between 5 pm to 6, and I was unable to move from the couch. It feels dirty, abused, degraded, and disregarded.”
