Boost for Air Tanzania as Govt Orders 5 More Aircraft

Tanzania’s flag carrier, Air Tanzania, is set to receive 5 more aircraft, after the government made a down payment of $258.7 million for the purchase, expected to be delivered before the end of 2023.

The planes will thus raise Air Tanzania’s current fleet size to 16. In addition to two new Airbus A220-300s received earlier this month, the airline’s fleet comprises two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, two other Airbus A220-300s and five Bombardier Q-400/Dash 8-400s.

Acquisition of the two new Airbuses birthed the airline’s efforts to introduce more international flights. Starting November this year, the airline will begin direct flights to Nairobi, Bujumbura and Lubumbashi.

Air Tanzania is the flag carrier airline of Tanzania, based in Dar es Salaam with its hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport. It currently operates 12 domestic routes, namely Zanzibar, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Geita, Bukoba, Kigoma, Mpanda, Mbeya, Tabora, Dodoma, and Songea.

Internationally, the airline flies to Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Comoros, India, and China.
