Bus that caught fire was not involved in an accident

Modern Coast coach of registration number KCU 154L that caught fire on Monday evening at Bendera trading centre along Chavakali – Kapsabet road, was not involved in an accident as earlier reported.

According to a statement from the management, one of the rear tyres caught fire as a result of friction at the wheel level as the bus tried to get out of a narrow road with potholes, while evading two cars that were involved in an accident earlier on.

The bus was headed to Mombasa from Mumias.

The bus had 20kg dry powder fire extinguisher which is suitable for fighting burning solids and liquids, however the crew could not manage to put out the huge flame that was triggered by petrol spill from one of the cars.

A gesticulation from the bus driver, aided all guests who were on board to alight safely.

The management says a standby bus was sent from Kakamega to take the passengers and they are on the way to Mombasa.
