Businessman Suleiman Shahbal Officially Resigns From Jubilee Party – LitKenya

Mombasa businessman and politician Suleiman Shahbal has officially resigned from the ruling Jubilee Party.

In a resignation letter addressed to Secretary-General Raphael Tuju on Wednesday, 6th July, Shahbal thanked the party for the support offered during his membership, noting that it was now time for him to join the party of his choice.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Jubilee Party for the support offered to me during my membership. In exercise of my constitutional right to belong to any political party of my choice, and guided by the law through Section 14 of the Political Parties Acts, 2011, I hereby wish to resign as a member of Jubilee Party,” read Shahbal’s resignation letter.

The vocal politician announced his decision to join the Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Mr Shahbal had vied for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the 2013 and 2017 General Elections but lost to incumbent Governor Hassan Joho.

In 2013 Shahbal vied on a Wiper ticket while in 2017 he contested under the ruling party’s ticket.

In June this year, Shahbal had expressed his interest to run for Mombasa gubernatorial seat in 2022 on an ODM ticket. He also expressed his support for Odinga in his 2022 presidential bid.

Shahbal will be battle out with Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir and Deputy Governor William Kingi who is also eyeing the ODM ticket for the Mombasa top seat in next year’s general elections.

Others seeking to succeed governor Joho who is in his final term include former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo.
