Vihiga Queens began their quest for the Caf women’s Champions League title on a low note after losing 0-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns in their group B’ opener played at the Al Salaam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.

Melinda Kgadiete’s early goal in the third minute was enough for South Africans to pick all three crucial points.

The Queens fought back strongly and tried to find goals, but did not take their chances. Vihiga Queens goalkeeper Lilian Onyango Awuor was named woman of the match for her outstanding performance.

Vihiga Queens coach Charles Okere said that although they lost the opening match, his team battled well especially in the second half.

“We shall now go back to the drawing board and plan for the second match against Asfar Club,” added Okere.

The inaugural tournament kicked-off on Friday with Wadi Degla (Egypt) stopping AS Mande (Mali) 3-1, while Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies FC also picked a 3-1 victory against Malabo Kings (Equatorial Guinea).

Vihiga Queens now shifts focus to the second match which is scheduled for Tuesday 9th November against Asfar of Morocco as South Africa’s Mamelodi will be taking on River Angels.
