Lamu county woman representative Captain Ruweida Obo Mohamed has promised to introduce a welfare programme for all the teachers in Lamu East constituency should she be elected area Member of Parliament during the next General Elections.

Ruweida who noted that the area has lagged behind in terms of Education which has slowed down its development urged residents to endorse her candidature in becoming the first ever female MP in the county.

“Because of insecurity in the constituency teachers want to be transferred to other areas where they are sure of stability.Current area leadership has failed to adress problems leading to lack of academic growth in the region and when I take over I’ll motivate our trachers. As we speak only 5 schools exist in the constituency and this so embarrassing because our growing population keeps running to other areas for enrolment of secondary education ” she said.

She vowed to work with all education stakeholders in the constituency in a bid to improve the worrying education standards in the area whose most ECDE teachers were reported not to be familiar with the Competency-Based Curriculum.

She noted it was a pity for the constituency which was receiving huge sums of CDF money for mega development projects from the central government yet it has no human resources capacity to take up the opportunities geared towards improvement of performance in national examinations.

“It’s so sad our top student in last year’s KCSE exam got a C plain and this average performance is attributed to lack of good will from the incumbent MP.We need proper investment in our education sector. There are no enough teachers and bursary allocation to the our needy children is skewed and inequitable.School infrastructure is in a bad state hence need for change” she added.

Lamu East is a region marred by marginalisation and neglect with Kizingitini Primary School becoming one of the few public schools to break the barriers and shine after producing a pupil who scored 400 marks in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education(KCPE) exams

The region is also notorious for drugs and brutal machete gangs and Ruweida,a pilot who permanently quit her prestigious career to focus on politics is optimistic that under her reign sanity and order will be restored.

She first joined politics in 2017 while still flying and successfully contested for the Lamu Woman Representative seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, flooring five other contestants, including Shakilla Abdala, the former holder of the position.

She will be using the ruling party Jubilee hoping to unseat the current legislator Athman Sharif, for the parliamentary seat in the August 9, 2022 polls.
