Former long-serving Attorney-General Charles Njonjo has dispelled rumours about his death.

In a statement, Njonjo dismissed as false the reports that he had passed away.

The former Cabinet Minister said that he was alive and in good shape, adding that he was at home in Nairobi enjoying the weekend.

“Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. I am well and enjoying my weekend at home as we celebrate Utamaduni Day,” he said in a press statement.

Last evening, social media was flooded with reports that Njonjo had died.

Kenyans and news sites that carried the fake story have since apologised.

A top communication expert and a friend of Njonjo, Salim Lone, regretted misleading the public by posting information he had not verified.

“I feel truly awful. I posted comments about my dear friend, Mr Charles Njonjo, and his passing. It seems I was totally wrong. I should have checked. I feel very ashamed and offer sincerest apologies to all who were misled by my post,” he said.

The former Constitutional Affairs Minister is 102.

In a past interview with the Nation, the Duke of Kabeteshire, as he is fondly known, said his family is his greatest source of joy. He married at 52 and he and his wife, Margaret Bryson, have been blessed with two children, Wairimu and Josiah.

“I’m humbled by what I consider to be my greatest blessings: my loving family, which, as expected, has grown over the years,” he said.

He is the only surviving member of the Independence Cabinet that was appointed by founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
