The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the re-opening of roads that had been closed to allow for the construction of the Nairobi Expressway.
In a press release dated Monday, 20th September, KeNHA Acting Director-General, David Muchilwa, noted that the opening of the roads will be done in phases, starting 30th September.
Muchilwa said that the anticipated completion of the Nairobi Expressway is in sight with great progress realised on a daily basis. The overall progress currently stands at 62.6 per cent with notable progress of construction of the operation and monitoring centre being at 93 per cent
The previously closed roads are set to be opened as follows; The JKIA -Mlolongo and the Westlands – James Gichuru sections will be opened on 30th September while the Haile Selassie – UoN Roundabout section will be opened on 15th October.
KeNHA however, noted that the congestion could still be experienced at the GM area where a footbridge is being installed as well as the Bunyala roundabout and Uhuru highway where hoisting of box girders is ongoing.
The authority apologised for any inconvenience that may be caused during the construction of the expressway.
“KeNHA would like to appreciate all motorists on the patience exercised during the implementation of these interventions. The schedule provides projected opening dates for the closed sections to ease the current traffic situations,” reads part of the statement.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution and road courtesy while driving as this will help manage traffic better.
The 27-kilometre expressway running from Mlolongo to the James Gichuru Junction at Westlands is set to be completed by June 2022.
