Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha said even though the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the TVET examinations calendar, the institutions were better placed to conduct the examinations.

The education CS said the institutions have been directed to explore possibilities of having students whose examinations are due recalled.

Speaking at Kisumu Polytechnic on Friday during a meeting with Principals of TVET institutions from Nyanza, Western and South Rift, Prof Magoha said that TVET institutions have put adequate measures in place as directed by the Ministry of Health to combat coronavirus and they could do their examinations earlier than expected.

He said most of the students at the institutions were day scholars and therefore not pose a big challenge on implementation of COVID-19 protocols.

The CS added that the institutions have been directed to explore offering classes in shifts so as to adhere to the social distancing protocol.

On primary and secondary schools, the CS said the ministry was engaging stakeholders to see how best to manage the aspect of social distancing once they reopen.

The Teacher Service Commission (TSC),  Magoha disclosed, is set to employ 5, 000 teachers and 10, 000 interns.
