The Ministry of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has ordered dusk-to-dawn curfew in parts of Lamu following a militia attack that left seven people dead in Widho shopping center on Monday morning 3rd January.
In a statement, CS Matiang’i announced that the curfew will be effective starting today Wednesday 5th January.
“Incidences of criminal attacks that have led to the loss of seven (7) innocent lives have been reported in Widho Sub-location, Majembeni Location of Lamu County. The attacks have also occasioned the destruction of private property and unsettled residents in the affected and surrounding areas,” read part of the statement.
The curfew will affect the following areas Mukunumbi, Majembeni, Ndamwe, Mkunumbi location, Witu division, Pandanguo location, Binde Warinde location, Witu location, Hamas location, Mpeketoni division, Bomani location, Pongwe location, Mpeketoni location, Bahari location, Mapenya location, and Lamu Central Sub-county.
The CS also said that the National Security Council had directed the immediate deployment of a multi-agency security team to recover illegal firearms and tighten security measures in the affected areas.
Residents in the Disturbed Areas are requested to cooperate with the Security agencies and to share information on suspicious persons and activities.
