Six months to the General election, the date for the presidential aspirant debate has been set.

The Media Owners Association (MOA), Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) and Media Council of Kenya (MCK), through a joint presser, set the date for July 2022.

Kenya’s presidential aspirants are supposed to pick a deputy beforehand and as such, MOA, KEG and MCK also announced that there will be a deputy presidential debate.

“It is suicidal for any presidential candidates or any deputy presidential candidates not to attend this.

“We expect we will work with the various political stakeholders and various presidential candidates once they are announced. We are positive and confident that because they want the best for this country and because they want to communicate with the voters, they will attend,” Media Owners Association Chairman Stephen Gitagama said.

The debate secretariat will be led by Clifford Machoka (Nation Media Group), Leo Mutisya (Media Council of Kenya) and Rosalia Omungo (Kenya Editors Guild).

They are tasked to engage political parties and other stakeholders prior to the material day.

“As media entities and as newsrooms in our country, and as we go about covering the elections we have no candidates,” Gitagama clarified.
