Washington received his 10th Oscar nomination on Tuesday for his role in ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth.’

Denzel Washington made history on Tuesday by becoming the most nominated black actor in Oscars history. The Malcolm X and Equalizer actor picked up his 10th nomination at the recently announced 2022 Oscar nominations for his role in the Shakespeare adaptation The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Prior to his nomination this year, Denzel was still the most nominated black actor; his ninth nomination was a result of the film Roman J. Israel, Esq. However, he hasn’t won an Oscar in 20 years. He has received two Oscars, one from the film Glory, for Best Supporting Actor and his second from Training Day for Best Actor.

Sidney Poitier, who died recently, was the first black man to win an Oscar for Best Actor in 1964 and Washington became the second in 2002.

The Oscar Award ceremony will take place on March 27th.
