Laikipia county secretary Karanja Njora who was recently sworn into office is already meeting resistance after the county assembly approved his nomination to head the position.

This was after a two-year wait since his name was forwarded for consideration for the post by the executive. It has since emerged that a section in the county were compromised to approve him, sideling others hence the current emerging resistance. Governor Ndiritu Muriithi is said to have pushed for Njora’s nomination against all odds to land the slot, and even witnessed the swearing-in ceremony at his Nanyuki office conducted by resident magistrate Vincent Masivo.

The governor said that the county had redeployed 200 workers to serve as business development officers after a training stint at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and were now tasked with assisting small and medium-size enterprises revive and improve their business ventures amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The deputy governor John Mwaniki who is against Njora’s elevation urged the newly sworn-in county secretary to decentralize service delivery, fight corruption and strengthen communication between the government and the people.

The governor used Laikipia assembly speaker Patrick Waigwa to lobby among MCAs to have the nomination of Njora approved. Njora, a former national government administrator has been serving in an acting capacity since a motion for his consideration was tabled for debate on the floor of the House on July 25, 2018, but supremacy battles between the assembly and the executive delayed his approval. The governor had on May 17 2018 written to the assembly for consideration of approval of the nominees but his request was thrashed by the majority of members when the motion was tabled in the house on July 25 the same year.
