Ten gunmen stormed Fino Hospital in Mandera County and kidnapped a doctor who was on duty on February 18 around 19:00hrs.
The abductors are suspected to be of the Al-Shabaab militant group. This is their second time raiding the hospital for medics. At first, they had captured three doctors then headed to Somalia before releasing two of them, leaving one hostage.
Mandera County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha confirmed the recent incident pointing out that investigations are underway and police were interrogating the hospital staff. Also, police had been dispatched to a mission to rescue the doctor.
Kyatha noted that the intentions of the militants are yet to be known, and none had claimed responsibility for the incident.
This attack comes weeks after a Mandera-bound bus treaded on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along Arabia – Mandera Road leading to the death of 13 passengers.
In April 2019, two Cuban doctors, Landy Rodriguez and Herera Correa were abducted by Al-Shabaab while on transit by a county government vehicle to the Mandera Referral Hospital.
Detectives revealed that the driver of the vehicle had been subcontracted by the militants to deliver the Cuban doctors. In a planned move, the outlawed extremist group blocked the vehicle along the road to Mandera, opened fire, killed one officer, and injured the other who had accompanied them. The driver was left untouched as they made away with the doctors who are yet to be found to date.
The driver, Issack Robow, appeared in Milimani Law Courts before Magistrate Martha Nanzushi on February 15 and was found guilty of playing an active role in committing the terrorist act.
“After evaluating the evidence on record, I find the prosecution has proved the charges against the accused person herein and l convict him accordingly under section 215 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC),” Nanzushi ruled.
He will be sentenced at a later date.
