East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Florence Jematia Sergon has vowed to help the people of Baringo County acquire firearms.

She claimed that the government has been reluctant to provide security in the area, often plagued by the evil of banditry.

Sergon said she was ready to go to any extent to ensure that her people are armed.

“We are tired of begging the government to protect us. Now we will protect ourselves. The ordinary Kenyan in this terrain is exposed to so much danger. Law enforcers arrive in this area with bulletproof clothes, is that fair? She posed.

The lawmaker promised to help the locals open a Paybill number to raise funds for buying guns.

“I am very much ready to contribute. I will willingly negotiate on your behalf so that gun sellers can lower the price. If the government has abandoned, we will look for solutions,” she stated.

She also blamed one community for fueling ethnic clashes in the county.

“We know the bandits come from the Pokot community. We are not saying that all the Pokots are bandits, but every Pokot is a bandit.”

Police in Kabarnet, Baringo, have this evening summoned to shed more light on her sentiments.

Since the beginning of the year, over 20 people have been killed by livestock thieves while dozens have escaped death with serious and minor injuries.

Hundreds of people have been displaced from their homes in Baringo, West Post, and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties, and as a result, learning has been paralysed in many schools.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and his Elgeyo-Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen have been holding peace meetings in their respective counties but all in vain.

According to Murkomen, the government is to blame for “protecting known criminals”.
