With no apparent heir to take over the leadership mantle from Presidential, the Mt Kenya region, in an unexpected turn of events, is branching from the norm.
A region whose political path is standardly predictable is now up for grabs.
Thanks to his 2013 political truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto has been the king in the vote-rich bloc, but now fortunes seem to be changing.
Two weeks after ODM leader Raila Odinga journeyed across five Mt Kenya counties – Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, and Kiambu – DP Ruto is back in the Mountain, outwardly to undo the gains made by the former Prime Minister.
Speaking in Laikipia today, September 9, the second in command downplayed Raila’s tour, saying it was insignificant despite the warm reception he received.
Dr. Ruto said Raila cannot purport to care about the region yet all along he has been its “enemy”.
He told presidential aspirants to forget about the Mt Kenya vote, as the locals were behind his State House bid.
“I hear my opponents have finally realised that Mt Kenya region exists. They have in the recent past been making efforts to climb the Mountain because now the presidential election is beckoning. I wish you remind them that the Mountain has its owners,” he said.
The endorsement of Raila Odinga by Mt Kenya billionaires has also stirred the political scene in the Mountain.
Mathira MP Rigathi Gathagua told off the tycoons, insisting that they have little say in the region’s politics and want to use Raila as the puppet to protect their multi-billion shillings empires.
“I want to tell those rich men that when they are finally done endorsing Raila Odinga, they should be reminded that Ruto is the current owner of the Mountain. Anyone who wishes to climb the Mountain must pass through Ruto,” he said.
Since Raila’s grand visit to the region, the Tangatanga team has stepped up attacks against the former Premier, portraying him as an enemy.
