DP Ruto Forced to Praise CS Munya in Tense Meru Tour

Deputy President William Ruto ate a humble pie when he visited Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya’s backyard in Meru on Tuesday.

Although he has been on a sledging spree against Mt Kenya leaders perceived to be backing ODM leader Raila Odinga, here the DP has some respect and was careful with his words. Some of the leaders who accompanied him were heckled.

Fearing that Munya’s Nyambene backyard could retaliate, the second in command and Maithira MP Rigathi Gachagua heaped praises at CS, saying he is a decisive leader and a performer.

They appealed to the top civil servant to rally behind the ‘hustler movement’.

This was a clear contrast of the words the DP uttered in South Imenti, which is Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungu’s political bastion.

Dr. Ruto taunted the county boss for selling the former Prime Minister in Mt Kenya.

“Please tell my friend Kiraitu that we have brains and he should not engage with nonsense. The people here are not fools,” he said.

When he visited Meru last month, Njuri Ncheke elders implored Raila to pick Munya as his presidential running mate in the 2022 race.

Prior, the Cabinet Secretary had indicated that he was ready to deputise the opposition leader and ruled out working with the DP.

“How can I work with someone who once accused me of planning to kill him? That can never happen. If I’m offered the position of Raila’s running mate, I’m okay with it,” he said.

Munya is one of the leaders in Meru with strong grassroots networks.

After losing the Meru gubernatorial seat in 2017, he decamped from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s side and joined the Raila’s National Super Alliance (Nasa). He accused the government of rigging him out.

However, it did not take a day before President Kenyatta approached him with the promise of a Cabinet position if he renounced his support for the ODM leader.

The Head of State feared that Munya’s rebellion could have worked against him in the repeat presidential poll.
