Deputy President William Ruto has assured Nairobians that his government will efface water shortages in the city if he is elected the fifth president of Kenya.
According to the DP, the water problem will end as he will focus on completing the stalled water projects to improve the supply of water to the residents.
“I know water is a problem in Nairobi, but my government, God willing, will complete Northern Collector Tunnel and Nairobi, Ruiru II projects, which will benefit the whole city,” Ruto added.
Data from Nairobi Water and Sewerage company shows that Nairobi requires a supply of 790,000 cubic meters per day of water, yet only 526,000 cubic meters is supplied by Ndakaini Dam. Meaning, there is a shortage of 264,000 cubic meters of water every day, which shows the extent of unequal water supply in Kenya’s capital.
DP Ruto was speaking in Mathare when he pledged with the residents to vote for him for empowerment through the Bottom-Up Economic Model. Through this, there will be a construction of at least 20 markets for hawkers and greengrocers.
“We shall construct 20 markets in Nairobi for hawkers and mama mbogas to operate from, shielding them from harsh weather conditions and harassment from the kanjo,” he noted.
He says that there will be legislations by the County Assembly to initiate policies that protect the small-scale entrepreneurs and create a friendly environment to conduct business. Traders will also be given a starting capital of Ksh5 million to support their activities.
Weighing on the housing problems, the DP said that his government will construct 100,000 affordable houses to improve the living conditions of the people living in shanties.
He told off his opponents who preach divisive politics, affirming that Nairobi will vote for Hustler Movement, and they will not cast their votes based on ethnic lines or endorsements from the ‘deep state’.
“Kanairo ni mtaa ya mahustler…Na hatupangwingwi and God willing come August we shall form the Hustler Government,” he added.
The DP was in the company of gubernatorial hopeful Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, senatorial aspirant lawyer Karen Nyamu, nominated Senator Millicent Omanga, and other leaders when he toured Kamukunji, Mathare, Embakasi Nouth, Embakasi West, and Embakasi Central.
