Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga, and Deputy President William Ruto will today move their campaigns to the Coast as the hunt for votes ahead of the 2022 General Elections continues.
Raila kick-started his tour at the old town on Tuesday but was forced to cut off his scheduled meetings to attend the burial of Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi’s stepmother in Vihiga.
Today, Raila is set to meet hundreds of the elderly at the historical Sheikh Khalifa Hall in Mombasa, three days after meeting community leaders at Kizingo and some ODM leaders at his Nyali residence in Kwale County.
Raila’s visit to the Coast is aimed at addressing party divisions during nominations and drumming up support to ease his journey to the State House come 2022.
“Discussions are based on how we can work together in harmony so as to strengthen our party in Mombasa and the entire coastal region,” said ODM Mombasa branch chair Mohamed Hamid.
Hamid further affirmed that ODM will conduct free and fair nominations of various candidates seeking political seats in the elections to evade divisions within the party.
“Yes, we met the party leader in Kizingo. He was very clear that the party will use consensus, delegates, or an opinion poll to select the candidates in Mombasa,” said Hamid in an interview.
On the other hand, a close confidant of DP Ruto, former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar, has hinted that the DP’s campaign trail is out for a two-day campaign tour, and they will be meeting professionals and Kaya elders before holding a rally in Shanzu.
