Deputy President William Ruto has criticised Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i following his earlier comments today while appearing before the National Assembly Security Committee.
Matiang’i, who had been summoned following the withdrawal of the VVIP General Service Unit (GSU) guards from his homes, went out of the ordinary to prove that the State did not no wrong.
He explained that the second in command has a total of 257 officers, with 74 of them watching his every step just to ensure he is safe.
The others are assigned to his private homes, businesses, and farms, Matiang’i revealed.
And to make his point clearer, the Super CS listed properties of the DP that enjoyed State protection yet they were not protected areas.
They include Weston Hotel, Kitengela Gas, Murumbi Farm, Mata Farm, Kwale Island Development Limited, Dolphine Hotel, and Koitalel Poultry farm.
In a statement this evening, the DP through his Secretary Communication David Mugonyi has rubbished Matiang’i’s remarks.
He stated that some of the properties listed by the cabinet secretary are not his. However, he did not reveal what he does not own from Matiang’i’s list.
“To underscore Matiang’i’s recklessness, many properties allocated to the DP in his statement to Parliament are in fact not his. To add insult to injury, Matiang’i asserts that he has deployed security to these unknown strange properties,” he said.
Dr. Ruto added that he is entitled to top security due to the nature of his office.
He asked why the details Matiang’i shared today had not been disclosed before yet he has been the Deputy President for nine years.
“Dr. Matiang’i has abused public resources and the power of his office to score cheap points in a futile attempt to humiliate, disparage, denigrate and ridicule the person and the Office of the Deputy President for political propaganda,” the DP said.
“The Deputy President does not deploy security to himself or to anyone else. When he assumed office in 2013, the National Security Council had already established a security model for the presidency and constitutional offices. Any change to the arrangement would have been discussed and formally approved at the appropriate level.”
