Deputy President William Ruto has withdrawn from the presidential debate slated for this month.
In a statement, Ruto’s presidential campaign director of communication, Hussein Mohamed said the DP will not agree to be grilled by biased journalists.
He noted that Ruto’s main competitor, Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga is media candidate for the top seat.
“We noted with much concern the repeated and continued bias and propaganda in a section of Kenya’s mainstream media in abuse of statutory terms of licence and violations of constitutional freedoms.
“We noted that unequal allocation of coverage, compounded by biased framing and negative profiling of Kenya Kwanza Alliance campaigns and personalities affiliated to it… We demand fair play as a matter of right as well as professional decency,” he said.
Hussein singled out the Royal Media Services (RMS) and the Daily Nation.
“We wish to highlight the notorious instance of runaway abuse of public bandwidth by Royal Media Services, a licence which has converted its platforms, especially Citizen TV, Inooro TV and Inooro Radio to official campaign mouthpieces of the Azimio la Umoja. The Daily Nation complements these abuses by becoming their print counterparts.”
RMS is owned by SK Macharia, a long-time friend of Raila.
In light of the above assertions, the Kenya Kwanza has advised the DP to snub the presidential debate.
