Deputy President William Ruto has weighed in on matters concerning the LGBTQ community living in Kenya in an interview conducted at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington DC, United States.

The DP was engaged with CSIS Africa Director Mvemba Phezo Dizolele when a curious observer in the audience rose to inquire about his point of view on the constant criticism and harassment faced by LGBTQ members in Kenya.

Responding to the poser, DP Ruto stated that he is a devout Christian who ardently follows the Bible teachings that bars romantic affairs between people of the same gender.

However, he added that this was just a personal standpoint as he also obeys human rights as demanded by the Constitution, which seeks to protect all persons from persecution based on lifestyle choices.

He says that the LGBTQ community should shelve their fears when he ascends to the office after the 2022 polls, assuring them full protection as required by the law.

“I do not think anybody should pick up arms against any Kenya irrespective of whether you like what they are doing or not. Every Kenyan must be subjected to the rule of law, and if you think any Kenyan is not acting in the right way, it is not for you to decide to harm them, it is for the law to take its cause.

No Kenyan should be subjected to any form of harassment or any form of harm. The only authority that can take action over anybody is the authorities that are permissible within the law, and if a Kenyan has not broken any law, nobody should harass them.

As public servants, we will operate within the parameters of the Constitution and the law, and every Kenyan must be safe within those parameters. There is no exception of anybody harming other Kenyans,” the DP stated.

Contrastingly, when the US Secretary of State John Kerry had visited the country in 2015, the Kenyan’s Second-in-Command made hard-hitting remarks on the LGBTQ community, saying that Kenya was not ready to persevere in the face of their ‘mystifying’ sexuality.

“The Republic of Kenya is a Republic that worships God. We have no room for gays and those others,” DP Ruto had told a Nairobi church congregation at the time.
