The Democratic Republic of Congo has lashed out at Deputy President William Ruto over remarks he made in a recent political meeting.
In a 15-second video clip doing rounds on social media platforms, the DP claimed that the Central African county has no single cow to produce milk despite its huge population.
“… we have a market in DRC whose population is 90 million people but not even a single cow. Just here in DRC, which is well known for having musicians like Kanda Bongo Man,” he said.
Apparently, the second in command was giving a promise to dairy farmers that they will have a new market for their milk if he becomes the President in August.
However, his comment has not been received well in Congo.
Haut-Katanga Province Senator Francine Muyumba Nkanga has taken to her Twitter handle to condemn Dr. Ruto.
Ambassador Nkanga said the remarks were unfounded and demanded an apology from the Deputy President.
“Mr. Vice President, William Ruto, this is really unacceptable, with all due respect, there is a need to withdraw this statement. If DRC did not have a single cow, how could Kenya sign economic deals with DRC?” she posed.
She said there are many Kenyan companies investing in DR Congo and making huge profits, adding the sentiments by the DP could hurt the relationship between the two countries.
“We are friends to Kenya. A candidate running for the highest office of the country, William Ruto needs to be diplomatically conscience as Kenya needs to strengthen economic ties in the region for Kenya’s internal economic growth. Kenya Airways is now flying in some of our big cities,” she wrote.
However, DP Ruto ally, Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen claimed that Nkanga was overreacting for nothing.
“Relax Madam Ambassador, that’s just like saying Kenya has no single singer because the good ones are in Kinshasha, Congo,” he said.
