In a dramatic twist of events, High Court Judge James Wakiaga has withdrawn from the high-profile murder case of former Kabete MP George Muchai after receiving threats.

Wakiaga made the decision on Friday, noting that the environment made it difficult to have him conduct a meaningful trial in the case in which the MP was gunned down along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi.

A report published in the Daily nation revealed that the five people accused in the murder case had reported him to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The judge clarified that the accused persons had complained about his behavior and were pursuing him to be investigated over gross misconduct and incompetence.

In 2019, the suspects registered their complaints, stating that “We (suspects) are not satisfied with this court. We have lost confidence in it and we want the judge to disqualify himself for being biased,” they stated.

Muchai was reportedly murdered in 2015 alongside his three aides when armed gunmen opened fire on his vehicle dead at the Kenyatta Avenue-Uhuru Highway roundabout in Nairobi.

Several suspects were arrested and charged with the murder, including Raphael Kimani alias Kim Butcher, Kimani Anyonyi alias Musti, Stephen Lipapo alias Chokore and Erick Muyera alias Chairman.

A relative who survived the dawn shooting recounted that the heavily armed gunmen disembarked from a vehicle that was ahead of the MP’s vehicle and sprayed bullets on the lawmaker’s entourage.

“They just started spraying it with bullets. When we saw that, our driver sped past the other car and when we came back to the scene a few minutes later, all the occupants of the vehicle were dead,” the relative stated.
