Residents of Nyanko village in Kegati, Kisii county, are engulfed in shock after one of them was allegedly attacked in the middle of the night by a huge cat that had a red piece of clothe on the neck and a white one on the abdomen.

Benard Makori Magare claimed he was asleep on the night of Tuesday, June 9, at around 11pm when he was woken up by someone kicking him on the head and on his legs.

“I was alone in bed as my wife who works as a nurse was at her workplace. I heard someone kick me on the head and then on the legs in a continuous cycle,” he narrated.

Magare said when he woke up he thought he was dreaming and after a few minutes he went back to continue sleeping. Shortly after he again heard someone kick him.

“When I heard someone kick me again, I decided to wake up and see what was going on. Then I tried to switch on the electricity and I found it was now back and I would see but I didn’t see anybody in my room,” said Magare.

He then decided to check out the rooms in his house then those of his children where he found them soundly asleep but would not see who was making the noise and the kicks.

It is at that point that he sat in his sitting room and called his pastor and together they prayed over phone before the preacher told him to go sleep without any worries. No sooner had he slept than he heard some noise in the sitting room.

“I took my panga and went to the sitting room, I found a very huge animal standing on my cupboard, it was so huge in the size of a leopard. Then it roared so dangerously and that is when I realized I was in danger, “Immediately after roaring it tried to pounce on me but I was too swift, I moved the opposite side and let it fall on the table,” said Magare.

“I launched another attack and it fell on the floor. That is when I tried to kill it completely but my panga was always bouncing and not cutting. Now, I would see it clearly and I realized it had a red piece of cloth on the neck and a white one on the hind leg and abdomen,” he said.

Magare then wrestled out with the animal until 1.35am when he decided to call his friends and brothers informing them about the ordeal. He said he sat in the sitting room up to around 5am when he took a chair and put over the animal, which had not died, and went to call his children who were asleep and his neighbors.

His brothers and uncles arrived in the house at around 6am to understand what was going on. They too tried to kill the cat but it would not die.

“Even pastors came and prayed with us. They tried to kill it but they would not until another pastor arrived who made prayers before they killed the animal,” he said. He said by 8am all his neighbors and the entire village had gathered in his compound to witness the bizarre but the animal’s size had reduced significantly and it was not the way it was at the beginning.

The area chief also arrived and the search for the cat’s owner had commenced with all the villagers looking at each not knowing whose it was.

“The villagers, chief and Nyumba Kumi elders arrived but all of them said they had never seen that cat in the village. We then made prayers and buried it. Up to now, we are yet to know whose it was,” said Magare.
