NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 15 – Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) has pledged to work with like-minded partners in order to spearhead its Sh50 million project of providing sanitary kits to girls in vulnerable communities.

The project, launched in 2020, dubbed #AchieveMoreGirl is aimed at reaching 30,000 schoolgirls within a time frame of 5 years.

According to DTB Director Pamella Ager, the bank is seeking to partner with other partners who are willing to reduce the stigma associated with menstruation among girls living in rural areas.

“As a firm believer in improving the lives of our local communities, we are happy to be working alongside each and every partner to take further this agenda and reach as many girls as possible. We envision a world where every girl can learn, play, and safeguard her own health without experiencing stress, shame, or unnecessary barriers to information or supplies during menstruation,” said Ager.

She added that so far the bank has managed to reach 15,000 girls, with more than 50,000 sanitary kits distributed to those living in Kilifi, Mombasa, Kibera, and Kiambu.

According to Ager, the project would also see both girls and boys sensitized on menstrual health hygiene in order to reduce the peer stigma associated with menstruation, and this would in turn transform the entire society’s outlook on the natural phenomenon.

“Education continues to be one of the main ways someone can transform their economic circumstances, and we as a society should not stand by as something as natural as menstruation keeps girls away from school,” she added.

She further noted that the program was aimed at promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace, and community.
