East African countries, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia have agreed to roll out cross border Covid-19 vaccinations.

This was agreed following bilateral meetings held between the countries as the region seeks to enhance vaccination as a key intervention in the pandemic response.

Health Cabinet Secretary Senator Mutahi Kagwe Friday, held talks with Health Ministers from Ethiopia (Hon. Dr. Lia Tadesse), Tanzania (Hon. Dr. Dorothy Gwajima Oneshphoro) and Uganda (Hon. Afifa Kawooya Bangirana) to discuss ways to collaborate and improve access and the uptake of vaccines in the region.

Separately, CS Kagwe held discussions with H.E Amira Elfadil Mohammed, Commissioner for Health Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development at the African Union Commission (AUC) and Dr. Christopher Bazivamo, Deputy Secretary General of East African Community (EAC).

The leaders agreed to have the region unite and speak with one voice in advocating for equitable and enhanced access to Covid-19 vaccines through COVAX to meet the rising demand for vaccination.

The talks took place at the side lines of an event to launch the Africa CDC Eastern African regional collaborating centre in Nairobi.

The centre will be established in Kenya to enhance the capacity, capabilities and partnerships of Africa’s public health institutions to detect and respond quickly and effectively to disease threats and outbreaks in the continent.
