World Marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge celebrates after winning the 2022 Tokyo Marathon [Eliuyd Kipchoge, Twitter]
World Marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei this morning both emerged victorious in the Tokyo Marathon, breaking course record along the way.
Kipchoge won the men’s race in 2 hours 2 minutes and 40 seconds breaking the previous record set in countryman Wilson Kipsang (2:03:58) in 2017.
“I am so proud to win in the streets of Tokyo, where the people have running in their heart and minds. It’s great to now have won 4 out of the 6 Abbott World Marathon Major races. Finally, I want to say I want this world to unite. My win today is to bring positivity in this world,” said Kipchoge on Twitter.
World marathon bronze medalist Amos Kipruto finished second in a personal best time of 2:03:13, while Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola clocked 2:04:14 in third.
In the women’s race, Kosgei crossed the finish line in 2 hours 16 minutes and 2 seconds, eclipsing Israel’s Lonah Chemtai Salpeter’s record (2:17:45).
Ethiopians Ashete Bekere and Gotytom Gebreslase finished second and third respectively in 2:17:58 and 2:18:18.
