Emmanuel Macron Re-elected as France President

Emmanuel Macron was on Sunday, 24th April re-elected as France’s president.

According to media reports, Macron comfortably defeated far-right rival Marine Le Pen in the second round of France’s presidential election, winning 58.55% of the votes against 41.45% for Le Pen.

The figures are compared to Macron’s first victory in 2017 when he won the election with 66.1 per cent of the vote against Le Pen who got 33.9 per cent.

Macron becomes the first sitting French president to have been re-elected for 20 years. He also becomes the only president under the Fifth Republic to have been returned to office by direct universal suffrage while holding a parliamentary majority.

Some of the world leaders have sent messages to congratulate Macron on his election victory.

European Council President Charles Michel, as well as the prime ministers of Belgium and Luxembourg, were among the first to congratulate Macron.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said Macron’s re-election was “wonderful news for all of Europe

United States President Joe Biden also hailed Macron’s victory.

“France is our oldest ally and a key partner in addressing global challenges. I look forward to our continued close cooperation – including supporting Ukraine, defending democracy, and countering climate change,” tweeted Biden.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also tweeted saying: “The citizens have chosen a France committed to a free, strong, and fair EU. Democracy wins. Europe wins.”

United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: Congratulations to @EmmanuelMacron on your re-election as President of France. France is one of our closest and most important allies. I look forward to continuing to work together on the issues which matter most to our two countries and the world.
