Former Ugandan Minister for Information Communications Technology (ICT) Aggrey Sirioyi Awori has passed away.
Awori, 82, who was a brother of Kenya’s ninth Vice-President, Arthur Moody Awori, died on Monday, 5th July, at a private hospital in Naalya, Kampala.
“He has been sick for about a month and I have been in touch with him until today when his wife, Thelma told me that he has died,” Peter Oguttu, a close friend of the politician told the Daily Monitor.
Awori was born on 23 February 1939, in Budimo Village, Busia District, near the Uganda/Kenya border as the 10 of 17 children.
His parents were the late Canon Jeremiah Musungu Awori, a pioneer African priest of the Anglican Church in East Africa, and Mrs Mariamu Odongo Awori, a nurse and community teacher.
Awori attended Nabumali High School in Mbale District and King’s College Budo in Wakiso District, Uganda, from 1959-1961.
He went to Harvard University from 1961 to 1965, where he attained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and then joined Syracuse University, also in the US, and attained a Master of Arts in Economics degree.
He was the MP for Samia-Bugwe North county in Busia District from 2001 to 2006.
In 2001, Awori vied for the presidency and came third, garnering 1.41 per cent of the votes cast. President Yoweri Museveni won with 69 per cent of the vote. Independent candidate Warren Kizza Besigye Kifefe was second with 27.82 per cent.
Awori was an outspoken opposition figure from the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC). He later abandoned UPC and joined the ruling party National Resistance Movement in 2007.
In 2009, he was appointed the Information, Communication, and Technology minister where he served until 27th May 2011, when he was dropped from the Cabinet and replaced with Ruhakana Rugunda in a reshuffle.
Awori was married to Thelma, who was the Director for Africa at the United Nations Development Programme. The two were blessed with six children.
