Chaos stalked a function organised to celebrate popular gospel artiste Elizabeth Nyambere’s 40 years in music on Sunday after former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga and his supporters arrived.
Maina was married to Nyambere’s daughter, Grace Wairimu before she was killed.
In yesterday’s event, which attended by celebrities and Nyambere’s legion of fans at Ruiru Stadium, the politician was accompanied by tens of his supporters.
He made his way to the podium and was welcomed by his mother-in-law, as his men tried to fit in the rest of the crowd.
However, a commotion ensued, forcing the emcee, Karangu Muraya to momentarily stop the celebration to call the attendees to order.
It was not immediately clear what Maina’s supporters did, but a video seen by this writer suggests that they attempted to take positions in the front row.
All the same, Karangu managed to pacify the crowd and the event continued.
Away from that, Wairimu was shot dead seven years ago by unknown people as she was travelling to Nyahururu alongside her husband and nephew
Their convoy was sprayed with bullets by unknown people.
Wairimu and the nephew succumbed to gunshot wounds while Maina escaped with minor injuries.
He claimed that he was the the target, but luckily survived the attack.
Maina’s first wife, Virginia Nyakio was also trailed and waylaid by a death squad that was cracking down members of the outlawed Mungiki sect. She was murdered with two other Mungiki adherents before their bodies were dumped in Gatundu.
After escaping several assassination attempts, Maina always moves around with his supporters, perhaps to offer protection in case of an attack.
