The Kenyan National assembly last week passed the BBI Bill with a fair share of surprises and controversy. Political pundits who had predicted the vote outcome, placed Ruto’s allies on the NO side and pro-handshake lawmakers on the YES side.
However, a section of Tangatanga MPs pulled surprises after they voted in favour of the Bill that they have long opposed. A section of the Ruto allied MPs accused their colleagues of being sellouts, claiming they were bribed to pass the bill. Kenyans attention will tomorrow shift to the Senate, as they anxiously wait to see how the dynamics will play out.
The upcoming Senate vote is already clouded with controversy as mobilization continues in top gear. A litany of screenshots has since leaked online depicting a well-orchestrated plan by notable figures in the Tangatanga brigade to mobilize as many as possible legislators to reject the Bill. In the leaked conversation, the senators receive instructions on where they will pick their ‘package’.
The lawmakers are also instructed to rally as many senators as they can to join the NO camp. Ruto’s team has been opposed to the Bill claiming it was untimely and ill-motivated. The brigade also claim that the Bill will lead to a bloated legislature and create unnecessary Executive positions that will lead lead to a burdensome wage bill.
