Ezra Chiloba Causes Scare About 2022 Presidential Election

The ghosts that haunted the 2017 presidential election could reappear in next year’s poll.

Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) director-general Ezra Chiloba has revealed that there could be challenges in the electronic transmission of presidential results from polling stations.

Appearing before the Senate ICT Committee, the former IEBC Chief Executive Officer said at least 224 polling stations are not connected to the internet.

He said if the problem will not have been addressed by the time of conducting the election, stakeholders will be compelled to seek alternatives.

“The 224 polling centres maybe served using alternative connectivity technology such as satellite phones. We are informed that IEBC has about 1,500 satellite phones that can be used to address this final gap,” he said.

Chiloba noted that it had been difficult to ensure there is network coverage in some parts like Turkana.

“You go to a place like Turkana for instance to ensure that they have a network but the locals will tell you they need water and not network,” he stated.

However, he assured that his authority will do everything possible to guarantee a free and fair presidential election.

When Supreme Court annulled President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory in 2017, retired Chief Justice David Maraga said the electoral commission “failed, neglected and refused to conduct the presidential election in a manner consistent with the dictates of the constitution”.

He said there were irregularities in the transmission of the results.

Chiloba was assailed by the opposition for allegedly aiding the government to rig. In April 2018, the commission sent him on compulsory leave for bungling the poll before he was sacked.

Earlier this month, he returned to public service as the CA boss.
