Deputy
President William Ruto is on the spot after a multi-billion road project that he
launched in his Uasin Gishu home turf has stalled.
Not even
a single kilometer of the Sh 2.1 billion road linking Kakamega and Uasin Gishu
has been completed, raising concerns that it is yet another project that sunk
public funds after the Chinese contractor reportedly left the site.
After
receiving millions as an advance payment, the contractor only did some
earthwork and bush clearing in preparation for the groundwork.
21 months
down the line and with just 6 months to 2021 when the project was to be
completed, not even a single kilometre of tarmac has been laid.
Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa confirmed the sorry state of affairs stating that “The project is already way behind schedule and the contractor has not shown any intentions to complete the project on time”.
The
commissioner warned the contractor to return to the site immediately or have
the contract terminated even as the contractor’s representative blamed Covid-19
for the delay.
“We have since overcome the difficulties and will be mobilizing
back to the site by next week Friday. We have also hired a new site agent who
can conversantly communicate in English to ease communication,” the
representative stated.
This is
the latest project launched by the DP to fail to take off in a long list of projects
promised by the Jubilee administration.
The DP
who prides himself in launching development projects has come under heavy
criticism for using them to advance his 2022 bid.
In a move that many saw as an attempt to ground him, President Uhuru Kenyatta explicitly stated that he would be launching projects in person and urged the public to reject any other impostor.
On Tuesday, July 7, President
Uhuru Kenyatta directed his
Cabinet Secretaries to take over the inspection of government projects across
the country, effectively taking away the role from
DP Ruto who he had been delegated the task before politics took centre stage.
