World football governing body Fifa has threatened to ban Kenya from all football activities after Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed disbanded Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and appointed a caretaker committee.

In a letter dated November 11, 2021, Fifa noted that its member associations are required to manage their affairs independently, without undue influence from third parties.

“We would like to address our concern with respect to the abrupt announcement of the decision taken by the Cabinet Secretary. As a matter of fact, we deem fit to high that all FIFA member associations, including the FKF are statutorily required to manger their affairs independently and without undue influence of any third parties (cf. art 14 par 1lit. i) and art. 19 para. 1 of FIFA statues). Any failure to these obligations may lead to sanctions provided for in the FIFA statutes, even if the third-party influence was not the fault the member association concerned,” read part of the letter.

“In esse, we consider that the aforementioned decision by the Cabinet Secretary to appoint a FKF caretaker Committee in lieu of the elected FKF executive committee is undoubtedly contrary to the above principles. Should this be considered as undue government in the internal affairs of the FKF, it could lead to a ban imposed on the FKF by the competent Fifa body. In such a case, all of Kenyan football would suffer the consequences and not just the individuals directly in the undue interference.”

According to Fifa the appointment of the caretaker committee is illegal and goes against Fifa principles.

“Therefore, we ask you to inform the minister that if her decision to appoint the FKF Steering Committee and the relevant secretariat is complied with, we will have no choice but to submit the matter to the Fifa Office for decision,” said the letter.

However, Fifa said it was ready to convene a joint meeting between FKF and the Ministry of Sports to discuss the arising dispute between the two parties.

“… we would like to reiterate our willingness to hold a meeting between FKF and the Ministry of Sports as soon as possible to address any concerns that both parties may have and, together, determine the way forward for Kenyan football.”

On Thursday, 11th November CS Amina appointed a 15-member caretaker committee chaired by retired Justice Aaron Ringera to head football operations in the country for six months.

However, FKF boss Nick Mwendwa vowed to oppose the take over maintaining that he was still in charge of the federation.

“I am still… in charge of the FKF. We won’t accept the decision taken by the sports ministry,” Mwendwa said.

FKF was dissolved after CS Amina received a report on a serious fraud investigation reported to police officers.
