President Uhuru Kenyatta is undoubtedly one lucky man who never experienced poverty during his childhood.
Born of Kenya’s first President, Jomo Kenyatta, he schooled in reputable high schools and even went to a top-ranked institution abroad, Amherst College in the United States, where he studied Economics and Political Science.
While in Saint Mary’s High School Nairobi, where he studied with his brother Muhoho Kenyatta, they were driven to school in a pricy Mercedes Benz, which had a private number plate, depicting class.
Despite all these, a former schoolmate of the Head of State revealed that the two were social butterflies and had learned to interact with other ‘normal’ students as they joined them in parades and even queue for lunch.
When Uhuru was aged 16 and promoted to form 6, his father gifted him a flashy car, a cream Mercedes Benz E Class with the number plate KWT 185.
A cream Mercedes Benz E Class, similar to President Uhuru’s car in high school.
The car had state-of-the-art technology of that time, with a maximum speed limit of 121km/hr, and could accelerate from 0 to 100km/hr in 10.5 seconds. The car also could use either diesel or gasoline.
“Saints students were allowed to drive and park their personal cars in school, once they reached upper 6th. Uhuru was no exception,” Uhuru’s former classmate Charles Ouko recalled, in a past interview with The Standard.
His former driver, Mugo Karuga, heaped praise at the fourth president of Kenya, noting that he is very humble and his background did not prevent him from interacting and living like other kids.
From time to time, Uhuru fell head over heels in love with his girlfriend, now current First Lady, Margaret Kenyatta, and could sneak from the State House to go have a good time with her.
“Uhuru and his good friend Jimmy Kibaki (former President Mwai Kibaki’s son) both espied their future brides while at St. Marys School.
“First Lady Margaret Kenyatta née Gaul and Sheryl Kibaki née Vienna were students at Msongari. Margaret is of Kenyan and German extraction, while Sheryl is of Goan extraction,” reminisced Ouko.
Ouko further added that Uhuru was a gifted sportsman and played rugby while in school. This made him appointed Sport’s Captain at Saint Mary’s.
