Kikuyu’s have for a long time been the champions of cooking bad food, what many people in layman’s language refer to as mashakura.
Not that their food is bad, how they prepare it is what determines how good or bad it comes out.
Below are some common meals among the Kikuyu’s
1- Pilau Njeri
Almost every Kikuyu (unless you grew in rich families) has tasted this and knows how good it can be.
It’s a combination of rice cooked together with potatoes. It’s loved by many for it’s simplicity in preparing.
Best accompanied with an avocado.

4. Waru/Potatoes
Potatoes are a staple food among the Kikuyu’s. They are put in every food they cook and woe unto you if you don’t look potatoes.
5. Nguja Matu loosely translated to ‘fold my ears’
This is a type of ugali that is cooked with potatoes and tomatoes in the mix.
Fry your onions, put your chopped tomatoes until soupy, add some water and let it boil.
Once it boils add some flour and cook your ugali the normal ways.
When ready serve and eat. Disgusting as it may sound it’s actually good for someone who cannot afford a better meal.
6. Mukimo
This is also a staple food not only in many Kikuyu homes but also in many Kikuyu functions.
A function is never complete when Mukimo is missing.
It’s a mixture of maize,peas/beans/black beans mashed with potatoes. Some people add ripe bananas to the mixture.

Rice with beans
This is a very quick meal and well loved by Kikuyu’s. It is most especially popular when shambas are full of beans awaiting harvest.
They are harvested before they dry up and turned into stew. Delicious is an understatement.
