The recently appointed Chinese envoy to the Horn of Africa region Ambassador Xue Bing is in Kenya after the conclusion of his first tour of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea and Somalia.

The regional diplomat and his delegation met Kenya’s Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Macharia Kamau on Friday where they deliberated at length about the existing bilateral relations between Nairobi and Beijing, as well as the future prospects of cooperation between the two nations.

After the talks, the Kenya’s MFA noted that the PS welcomed China’s move to appoint a special envoy to the Horn of Africa noting “the initiative is timely as it will add impetus to the efforts by various partners to find lasting solutions to the peace and security threats in the horn of Africa region.”

Before departing from Kenya, Ambassador Xue Bing is also expected to engage and hold consultations with other stakeholders and key players in the peace and security sector.

Xue’s assignment is primarily to understand the region better and work jointly with Horn countries and their neighbors in order to establish the nexus between peace, stability and development.

The new envoy arrives in Kenya to build on existing initiatives and efforts towards finding solutions to the challenges facing the region including conflict and displacements and climate variances that need humanitarian assistance,” MFA said ahead of Xue’s visit

The Chinese envoy will hold a media briefing at the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi Saturday morning as he sheds more light into his latest assignment as well as his inaugural deliberations with leaders from the concerned countries in the region.
