Former Mt Elgon Member of Parliament John Serut has passed away.

Serut died at a Nairobi Hospital on Wednesday after battling cancer since 2017.

His death was confirmed by the daughter, Michelle Serut on Wednesday.

The former legislator’s family had, late last year, issued a public appeal to offset his medical bills.

As of October last year, his bill had accrued to at least Ksh 20 million.

Leaders in the country have come together to mourn the death of the former legislator.

Deputy President William Ruto said Serut was a firm, bold and vocal politician who served the people of Mt Elgon with distinction.

“He was a gifted debater, persistent and a fighter for equal justice. We honour the rich legacy that he leaves behind,” he added.

On his part, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetngula on his part mourned the late as a hardworking and dependable leader who bolstered the unity and development of Bungoma.
