Kenneth Marende has dropped out of the Vihiga gubernatorial seat race after ODM party leader Raila Odinga picked him as Speaker of the Senate should he win the presidency in the August polls; he is the former Speaker National Assembly.
Marende was nominated to the position by Raila on Monday while unveiling Martha Karua as his running mate.
“To say no (to nomination as Senate Speaker) is like going upstream. No one can be unwise to swim upstream. You cannot ride two horses,” Mr Marende. Mr Marende served as the Chairman of the Kenya Power board until 2017 before being voted out by shareholders after serving for three years.
He had retired from the board but was still eligible for another term, he offered himself up for re-election for one of three vacant seats on the board. During the voting for new directors, the three new directors each garnered above 970 million votes while Marende managed a mere 2.3 million votes.
