These days it’s very common to hear of celebrities with big names and empty pockets. Some of them have been in the showbiz for many years, but they have nothing to show.

For comedian Benson Gathungu aka Muthee Kiengei, his story is different and inspiring.

After completing his primary school education, he worked for one year as a herdboy to raise money to take him to Form One because his parents were poor and age was catching up with them.

However, he dropped in Form Three after it became impossible to pay school fees.

“I told my parents the future will take care of itself. I went back to herding before I became a boda boda rider in Nakuru County,” he said in a past interview.

While in that hustle, a friend noticed he had a talent for singing and making people laugh. He advised him to produce his own songs and comedy plays.

“I heed to the advice and that’s how my career took off. I could sell my VCDs and make a good killing,” the entertainer recalled.

Breakthrough

The big break came in 2010 when he attended auditions for a comedy competition that was organized by Kameme FM. He was voted number one and the station gave him Ksh100,000 as a reward.

Kameme FM later hired him in 2013 to do the night show with Gatonye Wa Mbugua. Now they host the breakfast programme.

Within 10 years, he has built a multi-million shillings empire.

Apart from his radio job, he hosts a comedy show dubbed Kiengei Live on Kameme TV.

Also, he has established Kiengei Live Media, a production house that offers MC services, public address, live streaming, and video coverage.

Additionally, he is the CEO and founder of Enchipai TV, the first TV station that broadcasts in the Maasai language.

Further, the father of two has big investments in real estate.

A few months ago, the funnyman made headlines after he bought his father a well-maintained second-hand Toyota Prado car. This is despite the fact that his dad can barely drive due to his advanced age and he has to employ a driver for him.

When the car keys were handed to him, the old man shed tears of joy and blessed his son.

He wishes his mother, who died of cancer, was alive to enjoy the fruits of her son’s hard work.

Besides that, he is an ordained pastor under the AIPEA church.

“If God wants to bless, he doesn’t look at the level of your education. All you need is wisdom and knowledge as the Bible says. Also, accept every season you are in and never be idle,” he advises.
